These guidelines serve as informational support for our patients and are not a substitute for medical advice. Always consult Dr. Karpovck and his team or your own healthcare provider to ensure these instructions are appropriate for your specific needs.
Acceptable up to 4 hours prior to surgery
Not Acceptable up to 12 hours prior to surgery
These instructions are designed to ensure your safety and optimize your surgical experience.
Avoid disturbing the wound on the day of surgery by refraining from rinsing, spitting, or touching it. Expect a metal healing abutment to protrude through the gum tissue.
It is normal to experience some bleeding or notice redness in saliva
for up to 24 hours. To control excessive bleeding (where the mouth
fills rapidly with blood), gently bite on a gauze pad over the wound
for 30 minutes. If bleeding persists, contact our office immediately
at (352) 753-1114 for further instructions.
Swelling is a typical response following surgery. Minimize swelling by
applying an ice bag, plastic bag filled with ice, or a towel with ice
to the cheek near the surgery site. Apply ice continuously as much as
possible during the first 36 hours.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Avoid hot liquids and
foods. On the day of surgery, consume soft foods and liquids such as
milkshakes or smoothies. Resume a normal diet as advised unless
otherwise directed.
Begin taking pain medication as soon as the local anesthetic wears
off. For moderate pain, take 1 or 2 Tylenol or Extra Strength Tylenol
every 3-4 hours. Alternatively, Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin), available
over the counter in 200 mg tablets, can be taken instead of Tylenol.
Take 2-3 tablets every 3-4 hours as needed for pain relief. For severe
pain, use the prescribed medication as directed. Do not take any of
the above medications if you are allergic or have been advised not to
by your doctor.
Maintaining good oral hygiene promotes proper healing. On the night of
surgery, use the prescribed Peridex Oral Rinse before bed. Starting
the day after surgery, use Peridex twice daily, after breakfast and
before bed. Rinse for at least 30 seconds and then spit out. Brushing
your teeth and the healing abutments is safe; begin gently around the
surgical areas.
Following your surgery, it is imperative to adhere strictly to the
prescribed antibiotic regimen as directed by your healthcare provider.
This proactive measure is essential in preventing potential infections
and promoting optimal recovery.
Avoid using partial dentures, flippers, or full dentures immediately
after surgery and for at least 10 days, as discussed during your
pre-operative consultation.
Limit physical activities immediately after surgery. Considerations
for exercise should account for possible throbbing or bleeding; if
this occurs, discontinue exercise. Reduced normal nourishment may
weaken you initially and limit your ability to exercise further.
We hope these instructions have provided you with a clear understanding of what to expect before, during, and after your surgery. Adhering to these guidelines is crucial for a successful recovery and optimal outcome. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our office. Your well-being is our top priority, and we are here to support you every step of the way. Thank you for entrusting us with your care.
